In lieu of remembrances or political discussion... [Sep. 11th, 2007|12:30 pm]

My friend 5tephe has been trying to spread this idea around:

Today, do something to make the world better, no matter how small it is.

That's all. His hope is that, a thousand years from now, people will simply remember this day as a day to make the world a better place.

Even if you just take five minutes out of your day to help someone out, or clean up a public place, or donate a little bit of money to a worthy cause... do something to improve the world.

It's kind of funny that you say this because today while walking my dog an older woman appeared out of nowhere asking how to get to the courthouse in Burbank, about a 10 minute drive away. She said that someone told her to get off the bus at Brand in Glendale and then walk one block west, where she would find the courthouse. That person is insane, because the courthouse is in Burbank, not Glendale and the woman was totally screwed. As she stood there, not knowing what to do, and having to be on time for who knows what, I seriously considered telling her to finish my walk with me and that I would drive her to the courthouse. Whether fortunately or unfortunately, my socially acceptable upbringing (don't talk to strangers! be careful who you let in your car! don't tell people where you live!) made me walk away with nothing more than an "I'm sorry". That would have been a little bit bigger than something small, but still. I think that idea is a great one and I will try to find something else helpful to do today.

I offered to get someone ketchup and mustard packets for their lunch since I happened to be running to the convenience store anyhow... does that count? ^^

I accidentally convinced a friend to break up with her boyfriend who she was about to move in with, give up on getting an MBA, and start trying to apply for a PhD program she had never even considered before -- after she had already given notice at her current job.

Was that a good thing or a bad thing?

Well, if you honestly believe that you've pointed her towards a better path in life, then I'd say a good thing. Such things are hard to judge in the moment, though.
