Don't forget to join darthowrimo for the full novel excerpts! Or just ask me for the novel afterwards. That's fine too.
Keeping cats on board starships had been a tradition since the very first interstellar expedition. It was said they could sense danger innately, and commune with the soul of the ship herself. Mackenzie sometimes thought the whole thing pretty silly, but he was a cat person and therefore didn't argue too much. As if on cue, one of the Pallas Athena's two cats rubbed against Mackenzie's legs, and leaped lightly into his lap.
"Ah," remarked Mrs. Fulcrum, "they do always know when we're talking about them, don't they?"
Mackenzie nodded. "Mrs. Fulcrum, this is Brown. He's two years old. Brown, this is Mrs. Fulcrum."
Brown purred audibly.
"He's quite the happy cat, I see. But..." Mrs. Fulcrum looked at Brown's sleek, jet-black coat. "He's not exactly brown, is he?"
"Nah. But that's not why we call him Brown. You've had cats - you've of course seen the moods they get in when they're chasing something you can't really see across the floor, in a seemingly random pattern."
"Of course. One of our cats was named Ghosthunter for that very reason."
"Heh. Well, as far we can tell, this little troublemaker might as well be engaging in Brownian motion. Hence the name." Mackenzie grinned widely, rubbing his finger under Brown's chin. Suddenly, there were two cats in his lap - a calico cat had leapt up and was now trying to nudge Brown out of the way, vying for petting time.
"Ow!" Mackenzie exclaimed, as Brown used his claws to spring off of Mackenzie's lap, speeding off into another room. "Mrs. Fulcrum, this is Circe. Circe, meet Mrs. Fulcrum." Circe mewed and pawed at the screen. "Her full name is Bread And Circuses, as a result of her being a constant distraction to everyone on the ship. but we love her anyway."
"Hello, Circe," Mrs. Fulcrum greeted her from the screen. Circe cocked her head at the screen, as if trying to comprehend it, and then dropped down to the floor to go chase Brown some more.
"She's only a year old, and I'm not sure she gets the whole 'video telephone' thing yet. I assure you she'll be more friendly when you meet her in person."
